Consider this real-life experience:
Franca, a 28 year student of Unilag eagerly mounted her scale to see how many kilos of fat she has lost after 2 weeks of self-imposed denial of regular meals.
Out of excitement, she closed her eyes and when she opened to see the reading on the scale, the surprise she got was far from pleasant. Instead of losing weight, she added 3 extra kilos.
What was her reaction? She checked the second time, and when she discovered she was not making any mistakes with the reading, she recalls: “I lost control of my emotions and suddenly, tears of disappointment rolled down my cheeks”
Like Franca, have you ever experienced the terrible frustration associated with not getting result, after carefully following a weight loss diet for some times, perhaps starving yourself just to lose some kilos of fat? I agree that it can be a really very daunting experience.
If the above describes your experience, don’t lose hope on yourself, as if no solution is possible. Instead, take time to read this post to the end, as I will be providing some tested reasons why you have not been losing those fats despite your effort.
And you know, if we identify the real cause of the problem, the solution is easier, isn’t it?
Now, let’s isolate these reasons one after the other and see how to avoid the pitfalls.
Reason Number 1:
Let me explain this very important point by first providing answer to this key question: The question is: how exactly is excess fat gained?
Weight is gained when we consume certain foods, especially carbohydrates in excess and no exercise is done to burn the calories. By calorie, I mean the amount of energy you gain from eating and drinking. It can also refer to the amount of energy you burn while doing physical activities.
I will explain this using an example.
How much of calories does the body need per day? This depends on a number of factors, including gender, age, weight, height etc.
Let us use a recommended average of 2000 calories of energy.
Now, let’s assume your daily meal plan looks like this:
Lunch: Pounded Yam, Egusi soup, Beef and a bottle of Soft Drink
Dinner: Rice, Stew and 2 pieces of beef
Snacks (In-Between Meals): Doughnuts, Egg roll etc
Now let’s try to have an estimated idea of the total calories involved in this sample meal.
Bread: 250 cal
Pounded Yam: 800 cal
Egusi Soup plus meats: 700 cal
Soft Drink: 210 cal
Rice, Stew and Meat: 350 cal
Egg roll: 150 cal
What does the body do with this? Simple, it takes the required amount of calories that it needs to build up your body (2000 calorie or so). That means you have 460 excess calories remaining in your body.
Your body will now convert the rest of the food to fat and deposit it on your body. Imagine 460 calories being deposited daily. Calculate that to get the calories in a month. You will be awed!
Now, if you are the kind of person who drinks a lot of beer or carbonated drinks (soft drinks), what you do not know is that these drinks contain a high level of sugar and when you consume a lot of it, the sugar is been converted into fat and deposited on your body.
The point to remember is this: our bodies store up any extra calories and fats that we eat, if we do not burn them through vigorous movement and workout, those calories will continue to accumulate and cause weight gain.
There are also a group of people that don’t eat much, but they drink their calories. I am talking about individuals that drink Coke, Fanta, Alcohol,Malt, processed orange juice and energy drinks etc.
These drinks contain a lot of sugar too, and could contribute to your weight gain. So, even when one eats as little as ant, if he or she is fond of drinking the above drinks, he or she will become as big as elephant.
What You Should Do:
- Avoid sugary drinks completely. But if you must, go for healthy alternatives. In Nigeria, the only healthy alternative tasty drink that has zero sugar, zero calorie but supplies instant energy and that can last you for hours is called FAB. This is usually used by sportsmen and women. Click here to read about it here.
- Do not over-eat. Eat in smaller portions and pay careful attention to the class of food you consume.
- Stop eating late at night because the food will not properly digest before you sleep
- Exercise regularly
- Eat slowly and you’ll have a better chance of avoiding that over-stuffed feeling.
- When at home, serve yourself a smaller portion and think about whether you really want a second helping.
Reason Number 2
Perhaps you are thinking: What on earth is the connection between sleep and gaining weight. If at all insufficient sleep has any effect, it should be to lower your weight, not to add to it.
Unfortunately though, the opposite is the reality. In fact, while you weren’t sleeping, your body cooked up a perfect recipe for weight gain. Why? Let me explain.
Very recent research has revealed that people who sleep less than seven hours a day may be more likely to gain weight than those who get nine hours of sleep or more. The reason is that those who are sleep- deprived usually have reduced levels of leptin, the chemical that makes you feel full, and higher levels of ghrelin, the hunger-stimulating hormone.
Research tells the story. A study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that when people were starved of sleep, late-night snacking increased, and they were more likely to choose high-carb snacks.
A second study found that sleeping too little prompts people to eat bigger portions of all foods, increasing weight gain. And in a review of 18 studies, researchers found that a lack of sleep led to increased cravings for energy-dense, high-carbohydrate foods.
Add it all together, and a sleepy brain appears to crave junk food while also lacking the impulse control to say no.
What You Should Do:
- If you have trouble sleeping, get advice from the hospital.
- Get more sleep, sleep is central to good physical and mental health, so try to zero your mind off your worries and have sufficient sleep.
There are some drugs and pills that can cause you to gain weight if you use them. A good example of this is the family planning pill and injection and steroids. These medications can make you become big in size rapidly and contribute significantly to weight gain.
Certain medical conditions are usually associated with weight gain. A good example is diabetes. Patients who have to take insulin for the management of their diabetic conditions are prone to weight gain.
What You Should Do:
- Seek natural remedies to the condition. Glucofit is a time-tested solution you can consider. With Glucofit, you’ll eventually have to stop your insulin injections. Click here to order for your Glucofit.
- Be careful with what you consume
- Talk to your doctor
- Avoid undue anxiety which usually results in unnecessary snacking
Reason Number 4
Other factors include age and depression.
As you grow, your metabolism decrease and you are likely to gain more fat. Remember too that aging leads to muscle loss and muscles are calorie burners. So, be reasonable with your expectations.
